37 hits -- so far! -- today. OK, so what do I want for Christmas? Number 1 on my list: To see my niece (esp more often in the future) without "distractions." Number 2: That would be a safe place to live...or at least to be safe in the place where I live now! "Distractions" of the past include: Apparently, I was watched on the surveillance cameras by certain residents of my apartment building last Christmas evening, as I walked through the doors of the lobby with a bag full of Christmas presents. A certain resident followed me the next morning, as I arrived home from the Crystal Mall, asking "Did you go out?" But I ignored her and walked away. For most of 2011, I have been relentlessly pursued by said resident, a senior who, it has been obvious to me, in her appearance, habits, and conversation, has a drug habit. Sometimes, God works in mysterious ways to "get the bad guys!" However, I say she is "bipolar" and needs a good psych doctor with conscientious medication monitoring. I feel that she is self-medicating for a reason.This is just my opinion.)"You give your opinion." -- R.C. WHAT DO I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS? More time spent with those who are dear to me. First Impressions

"Impression, Soleil Levant" or, "Impression: Sunrise" (1872). This painting is responsible for the birth of the term, "Impressionist." It was included in the first exhibition held by the Society of Painters, Sculptors, and Engravers in 1874. Monet was a founding member of this society, which had originated from the express desire to end the artistic stranglehold of the Salon. A critic...M. Louis Leroy wrote a now famous article in Le Charivari in which he used the term "Impressionist" based on the title of this painting. Despite the fact that Leroy had used the word derisively, the group decided to adopt it and painters such as Renoir and Degas were happy to be called Impressionists. Impressionist art is concerned with capturing on canvas the light and color of a fleeting moment, usually with brilliant colors painted in small strokes, side by side, rather than blended together. Ironically, "Impression: Soleil Levant" is not typical of Monet's work...His aim was not to create an accurate landscape, but to record the impressions formed while looking at that landscape. "Mission Life Entities" can be found pursuing any and every occupation. Understandably, a whole lot of people aren't interested in signing of for the sacrifices, turmoil, and disappointment the M.L.E. faces in exchange for occasional profound satisfaction...We all honor God best by devoting our finest talents and passions to him, since He bestowed us with those talents and passions...And by making this world a more positive spiritual place, that is exactly what M.L.E.'s do -- nothing more, nothing less. I would like to dedicate this post today to the men and women of the New London Police Department who care enough to make a difference in the lives of ordinary people. On Wednesday, September 28, 2011; I was greeted by pennies raining down on me as I exited my apartment building that morning. Pennies from Heaven? Not quite. It appears that some residents of Williams Park Apartments where I live on 127 Hempstead Street in New London, Connecticut have a mistaken impression of me. Pennies rained down on me from Heaven...five years later....almost to the day...that I received the medical help I needed at Pequot Health Center in Groton, CT, thus being rescued from the negligence of the Public Healthcare System on September 29, 2006. (ASIDE: Blood tests were drawn for about 12 different ailments, which revealed the high blood sugar remaining in my system hours after my last meal...which ultimately led to an expert diagnosis of Diabetes Type II by Dr. Patel in Groton, Connecticut in February 2007. Which restored my faith in doctors so that I was able to seek and receive surgery through Dr. Calla in Norwich in January 2007 and diabetes maintenance through Joslin Diabetes Center in Mystic and New London, starting in June 2007. Oh, and the healthy meals I selected weekly at Pequot Cafe in Groton from September 2007 through May 2009 helped me as well.) HOME SAFE. On Wednesday, September 28, 2011; pennies rained down on me from Heaven. Maybe they were from Paula after all. I got the "caveat," the "hard evidence" I needed! Someone arrived on the scene who listened and cared. (Did Russell send him?) SMILE! You were on candid camera :)! Thanks to the hard work of certain members of the New London Police Department and the ongoing protection which I have received from My Guardian Angels here on Earth for the past several years, by Christmas time...the only heroine left in this place...that'd be me!!!...* * * :) Eventually, we all get our just desserts. Meetings are once a month on Mondays, usually at the Groton Public Library. (What am I working on? A children's book and a young adult novel.) Be sure to watch "Dancing with the Stars" tonight and Tuesday night for the Season Finale! Who will win? The shy and unlikely late bloomer, Rob Kardashian, who has been overpowered by his sisters most of his life? The war hero and skilled dancer from the git-go; J.R.? Or the elegant and beautiful perfectionist, Ricki Lake? It's anyone's guess! Did you know that I met two-time dance champion Kym Johnson at the Mohegan Sun's "Reality Check" series on June 17, 2011? Each month, the public space at the entrance of the East Lyme Public Library and Community Center building allows a local artist or photographer to showcase his or her talents to the public. THE RIVERFRONT. "The property is bordered on the west by the Lieutenant River, which meandes through Old Lyme, later joining the Connecticut River, just before it flows into Long Island Sound. The Lieutenant River is in constant flux, as the tide fills the river to capacity, flooding the grassy marshes along the riverbanks, for which Old Lyme is known to attract artists. Using a borrowed canoe, the artists would investigate" the network of rivers and rivulets. The ever-changing light on the river and marsh grasses inspired them, as it does me. Canoeing, anyone? MARSHFIELD HOUSE. This unassuming white structure, rear of the Krieble Gallery, was designed by New York architect Philip Hiss (1857-1940), as a Colonial Revival house built in 1937 by Judge Robert McCurdy Marsh. And the actual site where I stood, in a different place and time, in turn of the century garb, as a "virtual" model for my painting of last Fall 2010..."Girl Looks Outside." THE FLORENCE GRISWOLD HOUSE. Captain Robert Harper Griswold bought it in 1841. His youngest daughter, Florence turned it from a sea captain's mansion to a boardinghouse for artists, charging $7.00 per week, communal meals and accommodations. The Old Lyme Artists Colony of American Impressionist style painters stayed here as her guests from 1899-1922.

"Despite the fact that the Impressionists, both in France and America, championed the notion of painting outdoors -- Most eventually returned to the studio to complete a work of art. The early Old Lyme artists led by Henry Ward Ranger work outdoors with the intention of gathering visual info in a sketchbook or an oil sketch. In contrast, "plein-airists" ventured outside and set up painting stations...Most of the artist who came to Old Lyme also had studios in New York or elsewhere. Good Morning to you all, my Faithful Readers! If you are still here, it feels good to be "home," (in the words of Julianne Hough, former dance instructor on "Dancing with the Stars;" airing Monday and Tuesday nights live on ABC TV. Just thought I would mention a fun factoid. Y'know Kim Johnson, the blond with the Aussie accent? I met her, in person, along with Dimitri Chaplin, at the Mohegan Sun "Reality Check" series, Free Performance and autograph signing on -- no less, June 17, 2011...the four year anniversary of the fateful day we discovered my best friend Paula had passed. Coincidence? I think not! We both loved the show and would call each other during commercials to dish. So...the Four Year Interlude since the passing of Paula...the 2-Year interlude within the Interlude of a major relationship for me, my friendship with Russell. Sometime around mid Summer, I feel I began what is the Second Half of My Life. I plan to retire this blog by December 2011. That's right, everyone! I'm getting off my soapbox. From its "humble" beginnings as an intended expose on the Public Healthcare System...which led to CSI#1...and CSI #2...I think that's more than enough trouble for one lifetime. I feel this blog attracts danger! It feels good to be safe; safer than I have been in a long time; I hope. The only way Out of something is through it...so think SAFE in order to be SAFE...and retire what attracts danger! However, being that I live in New London, CT; I feel there is no Middle Ground: only the very wealthy...and the very poor...and basically...it's exactly the same thing! And so...in order that I may live the Second Half of my life...without attracting any more trouble... if I can help it...It's time to start living and stop blogging! ASAP. Partly sunny and very peaceful at Ocean Beach. I felt safe among the patches of crocuses, blooming in profusion among the gardens, and surrounding the mini golf course at Ocean Beach. HISTORY OF OB PARK

In 1893, the City of New London purchased White Sands Beach for $25. From that time forward, the beach, located on the City's southern most shore was known as OCEAN BEACH PARK. The tract included two parks, a small one on the west end and a larger park on the east end. The two parked were joined by a narrow stretch of beach. Rugosa Rose

RUGOSA ROSE Also known as the wrinkled rose, this plant has fragrant pink, red or white blossoms that bloom several times throughout the Spring and early Fall. This plant stabilizes the sandy soil and its fruit (rose hips) are a food source for wildlife. Rose hips are also used to make syrup, jam and jelly. Rugosa Rose can grow from 2-6 feet and the branches and nettles provide an almost impenetrable shelter for small birds and mammals that call this habitat home. Positive Changes have come to the landscape at WP Apts. I applaud the attempt to bring the community IN, but I know certain members of the population are slow to change. I also know that I don't mix well in certain situations. I prefer to join the community WITHOUT, such as the Riverside Park festival last Sunday, at the last minute notice in The Day for "en plein air" painting. There certainly was a cool vibe in the air last Sunday as I toted my paints and favored a certain tree in this park atop the hill, overlooking the Thames River, just off of Crystal Avenue, near the Goldstar Bridge in East New London. Accompanied by the music of live bands, I enjoyed the new direction my "job" (OASIS) is taking! I didn't see the day go by and everyone who attended was friendly to me; including many people who I recognized from my travails in downtown New London from Summer 2010. "Good natured!" New London Landmarks will meet at the Pilot House at Ocean Beach on the evening of October 13; 6:30-8:30 to address the issues of Saving Riverside Park for the City of New London and the children at the new magnet school.

So that's what happened to him! Paintings in acrylic and oil by the artist "Sasha" are on display on the second floor of the Westerly Public Library, the temporary home of the Hoxie Gallery. Not surprisingly, my favorites included a trio: "Russian Fairy Tale I," Russian Fairy Tale II" and "Russian Fairy Tale III." The First features a beautiful red bird of paradise...the Second in the series, the gentleman is wooing her...and the third, ah! Dragon-slaying! (Need I say more?) "Sasha" is Aleksandr Trachishin, who was a Resident Artist from Russia, residing at the Griffis Art Center in New London in the early 1990s. As I stayed home and rested all day on Friday, I tuned in to my fave afternoon shows! First, Better Connecticut with Scott Haney & Kara Sundlan (sp?) on Channel 3 at 3. This is a fun-filled, light-hearted TV show with lots of useful information for those who live (and work) all over Connecticut. Here is some helpful advice for those of you who are (still) single! DATING ETIQUETTE. The "date doctor" says: On the First Date: Go out together for coffee or ICE CREAM! (I'll take the latter. I love coffee; but -- I'm almost always hungry! And I looooooove ice cream!) The Second Date: The "date doctor" (herself a woman) feels that if you both decide that you like each other enough to see each other again; the gentleman should take the lady out to dinner and pay! The ideal spot differs with each couple, but a place that is nice and quiet where you both can talk is the best bet. The Third Date: (How does anyone make it this far?) In this economy and tough times; consider "Cheap Dates!" To suit the preferences of the couple, cheap dates can be anything, from taking hikes in the local parks and beaches with a picnic lunch (and a bottle of wine :)... and going to the grocery store to shop and cook dinner at home....Your place or mine???...* * * :) (Denise...Denise Dances...2011).

OK. It's true that I choose to do this: "Denise Dances" blog; writing about my life experiences and communicating to all of you readers out there on-line. I choose to do this. It's volunteer -- WORK. That means that I don't get paid to do this. I do enjoy doing this. I feel that I am trying to make the world "a better place" as well as to tell "my side" of the story (as I feel "listening" is indeed a lost art these days, which we should all practice a lot more of; including me!) However, as more creative projects take hold of me; including my art studio, OASIS (my Third Year: Sept.-May); and planning more Gigs for MAAP in 2012 (also my Third Year) -- I would like to wean off of my blog a bit and start to keep a Private Journal. How much of this blog, "Denise Dances" is the real me? Or is it the face I choose to show to the world? My Blog (which subsequently has become MY VOICE, along with "Fool's Gold" and MAAP) may need to step down from its soapbox for a while. Like I said, whenever I do any type of work; three years seems to be the absolute limit for me and I feel totally burned out, physically, mentally and emotionally. So...Monthly Updates instead? (To keep my focus only on what is essential). Gotta live the second half of my life...so we can all get...THE REST OF THE STORY! I don't plan to live the Second Half of My Life on-line! Thanx to Everyone; my faithful followers and anyone who is new to my site. I am trying to become positive and stay out of trouble these days! I realize that everything I say and do affects others, especially the youth of today. It is a constant struggle for all of us to set a good example; but it can be achieved with determination and not without a whole lotta faith! 31 hits on Tuesday (9/13). In the Seventh Century A.D., the prophet Mohammed founded "Islam" at Mecca in Arabia. At the age of 40, Mohammed started receiving revelations from God. "Islam" wasw established by the Moslems. Its laws and beliefs were written in "The Koran." "The Koran" gives guidance on earthly matters. If man refuses to submit to God and do His will, he will suffer the consequences...in the Afterlife. The good, however, will enjoy a garden of paradise. (-- I'm there! -- DH) The evil, to severe punishment. (Don't interfere with their penance.) Two angels, "Munkar" and "Nakeer" are said to interrogate the deceased after the mourners have gone. On the day of resurrection, the deceased will stand before God while all the details of their past life are read from a scroll. Their good deeds and bad deeds are weighed against each other. The Koran mentions a bridge over Hell. All are challenged to cross it. Said to be 'finer than a hair and sharper than a sword,' believers cross over successfully while unbelievers fall into a deep abyss. {ASIDE: Isn't there always one? The Bible often refers to those who "walk the narrow pathway to God's Kingdom." If per chance you witness me on one of my daily strolls, often at Ocean Beach, lining the pathways along the gardens...or the curved route along the mini golf course...or the Nature Walk trail along Alewife Cove...please believe...that I am attempting to choose...to "walk the narrow pathway to God's Kingdom"...every step of the way...and good luck to those who would attempt...to stop me. Great Performances on WGBH (PBS) topped off my evening on the ten-year anniversary of 9/11. Featuring the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, live from Lincoln Center, the evening serenade consisted of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection," performed, and ultimately ending with a chorus singing in Italian (with English subtitles) such words as...."our seeds shall be sown again"...."we shall overcome"..."we shall rise again"...Surprisingly, I found it hard to tune in to this concert until the banging and clashing of the end, accompanied by these words!

FEMA OPENS RECOVERY CENTERS TODAY (Hartford) -- Gov. Danniel P. Malloy announced Wednesday that Federal Emergency Management Agency centers will open today (Thursday, Sept. 8) in every county of the state to help homeowners and businesses affected by Tropical Storm Irene. The recovery centers are staffed with state and federal disaster recovery specialists and representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Those with damage or losses as a result of the storm are encouraged to register with FEMA before visiting by either calling (800)621-3362 or going on line at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov or http://www.m.fema.gov The New London County center is at the Groton Senior Center, 102 Newtown Road in Groton (Exit 88 off of I-95 from New London; take right off the exit ramp). Confront Injustice

Dorothea Lynde Dix ((1802-1887) initiated the most widespread reform for the "mentally ill" (quotes mine) that occurred during the nineteenth century. Her first experience in mental health reform came about as a result of an opportunity to conduct a Sunday school class in a jail where she found mentally ill people kept in unheated cells because "the insane do not feel heat or cold." One of the conclusions of her research was that by merely improving the living conditions of the mentally ill, their illness could be greatly alleviated. Dix played a major role in founding 32 mental hospitals, 15 schools for the "feebleminded" (quotes again mine), a school for the blind, and numerous training facilities for nurses. All that must happen in order for a tragic injustice to crumble is for someone to confront it. (Boldness mine, too!) That person must have perseverance and must not be easily defeated by opposition. It is totally amazing what one woman can accomplish if she will press forward confidently rather than "shrink" (quotes mine! :) back in fear. "You Made a Mistake!"

("The reason you're in the situation you're in is because YOU made a mistake. You moved to New York and that was a mistake!") (January 2005) The reason I'm in the situation I'm in is because I made a mistake. In the Fall of 1997, I was "seduced" by FREE ballroom dance lessons from a studio franchise; which came to me from -- of all things, my love of GARDENING -- through a Michigan Bulb Company catalogue flyer insert. I had my first lesson. I liked it. I came back for more. At the end of this "trial period," the studio owner said: "Do you have $500?" I didn't. And I didn't want to put it on a credit card. I had a job, as a Special Ed Aide at Fitch Middle School (my favorite job, remember?) in Groton (the place of my blessing). I took a second job. It was at Brookstone in the Crystal Mall and I knew the manager, himself a graduate of the UNH Master's degree in Education program (1995-96). From 1997-1998, I had a full-time day job at Fitch Middle School; 3-4 evenings a week of Group (dance lessons) at the studio. Just for the Christmas season, I took a second job at Brookstone on alternate evenings and weekends. By the time my seasonal job ended in January 1998, I became very sick with a common cold, sore throat, etc. I'm ashamed to even try to remember how much of my hard-earned cash I spent on ballroom dance lessons from the Fall of 1997 until my next job; a temp assignment at Pfizer in Groton ended (July 1998-January 1999). It was in the Fall of 1998 that I accepted that "first date;" once again, "seduced" by fine dining, symphony concerts, and that first trip to Key West, FL in the Winter of 1999. ("You're a little depressed. There's medication...!") --When does "a little depressed" become "a lot depressed?" Even back then, it was obvious. What? you ask. When my temp assignment at Pfizer ended in January 1999, my art lived on, in the Pfizer Family & Employee BARE (Bringing Art to the Research Environment) Exhibit from February to May 1999. ("Spring Freshet," circa 1993.) The costly ballroom dance lessons and a total of 4 costly dance competitions became fewer and fewer as my income went down and my unemployment went up in Winter-Spring 1999, and well into the next decade! When I was "let go" from my job as a First Year Teacher at Harvard H. Ellis Regional Vocational Technical School in Danielson, I was further "seduced" by the low rent offered to me at a luxury apartment by the beach in New London. From rising unemployment...and under-employment...to Depression...to disability and the Public Healthcare System...to increasing physical health problems, concurrently occurring with "The Change" (2006)...to a sudden change in my friend's behavior (Fall of 2004)...and changes to my work environment at Shop Rite in NL (January 2005-April 2006)...changes in the behavior of my nosy neighbors at The Residence (Fall of 2007)....leads to CSI-New London...and ("Pride goeth before a Fall!")...CSI #2. ....grew out of Hinduism in the 6th Century B.C. As the individual personality progresses through a series of graded paradises, a pure spiritual state of "Nirvana" is attained. Ultimately, though, the soul must continue its pilgrimmage. In Buddhism and Hinduism, Hell does exist. But it's not necessarily permanent. In Buddhism, Hell is entered by a "Bodhisattva," who then releases other inmates. A "Bodhisattva" is a highly evolved spirit and on the way to becoming a Buddha, due to merit gained through previous earthly lives. In Chinese, Tibetan, and Japanese Buddhism, Yama is the judge of the dead. He is the son of Vivasvant, the first mortal to die and move forward to...The Afterlife. Hi! Live from the Groton Library today. I'm back! First of all, I would like to say that I feel extremely blessed to have remained unscathed in the wake of Hurricane Irene. She is a remember to all of us that health and safety are two of the most important things in life and should not be taken for granted. In other words, quit yer b***ching about "the little things." It is daunting to hear on the local news each evening about the stress of many homes in the area being without power for about a week or longer. The things we all take for granted! I hope and pray that we are all able to get back on track with our daily lives soon and that most of you have been able to escape the "wrath" of Hurricane Irene, "unscathed," as well. As I've often said, I've survived many situations of danger throughout my life of being a "young," independent adult and I would like to add, "unscathed." Let's hope my victories, and yours, as well -- Continue! (Once again, I couldn't have made it this far without you, My Guardian Angels here on Earth; and -- My TWO in Heaven!!!...* * * :)

Hurricane Irene!

Tuesday, August 30, 2011....Live here from the Groton Library! First of all, I hope and pray that everyone has managed to STAY SAFE and sound during Hurricane Irene; with minimal damage to property and person. As for me; I was kept high and dry on the 8th floor of my apartment building. However, we did lose the power around 12 Noon on Sunday; and the power was restored sometime Monday afternoon when I arrived home (again, from the Groton Library). I am sooooo depressed that Ocean Beach is closed today, as it would be great for swimming (always hot due to tail end of "The Change," I guess). "Don't mess with me!" :)....I am always happy to see justice done, but it appears we are not out of the woods yet. Great job! From the email I received, as the G. Library just received power for the internet as I walked in this afternoon; it sounds as if Ocean Beach is trying to open tomorrow, Wednesday. As anyone who knows me too well can tell you; I often find a way to b**ch and complain about things. But, the things we take for granted. I got my power back! A/C, nice and cool, soothing, helps me sleep. Lights, so I can see and read. My TV and my music channels. My stove, microwave, and toaster so I can cook and eat hot food! My coffee maker in the morning! Lovin' it! Yesterday, I spent most of the day outside, here at the Groton Library, and I was rewarded by seeing dozens of rams and lambs in full sight in the front fields along Route 1; alongside colorful zinnias growing in the gardens. I even spied two little brown baby lambs! Of course, DQ was closed. (What did they do with all that melting ice cream?) And I walked the track around Poquonnock Plains Park, but it was hot and populated. In the fall, esp October, it will be beautiful there. I am in the process of photographing all of my paintings, in the hopes of future reproduction into prints and notecards, but I do not see any profit in this. The artists whom I've met and seen out on Block Island appear to be doing quite well in the sales of original oils and watercolors. Stay tuned for my Solo Art Show at the East Lyme Public Library and Community Center, for the month of September 2011! Come on in and get your Christmas shopping done early this year! I know that my readership has dropped this month; but I went through my slush pile at home and I still have some more good stuff for you! 25 hits last Tuesday. Not bad! I guess everyone is returning from their vacations and getting back-to-school shopping under control. It is good to stay "in control," but no one is in control or has control all of the time. Take a look at some of these "beauts" where I live. Safety first! In retrospect, this summer has had its difficulties, but there is nothing so healing as an invigorating swim in the ocean, even weathering the waves. The morning swims have been restorative to my health this summer, through June, July and now, late August. Swimming is what Russell loved to do best, and I've spent this summer processing the loss of my dear friend. My loss; Heaven's gain. Regardless that he has been "promoted" to Guardian Angel, along with Paula, I, as well as many of you are feeling the loss of his earthly friendship and other relationships very strongly. Nobody said it was gonna be easy, but swimming while remembering Russell has been very healing. Try it sometime! During the month of September, it is sure to be delightful. C'mon! Remember Russ(ell)! ANCIENT BELIEFS: Hinduism and Buddhism. Is there life out there? I'll say! -- Rams, lambs (growing big and woolly now); two donkeys standing under a tree; chickens (lots of them); and the goats are around somewhere. I heard the big white dogs barking as I ate lunch out back this afternoon but I remain undaunted, as always! The people of early India did not believe in reincarnation. After death, man went to a heavenly place with the gods if he was good, and to Hell if he was evil. The Iranians shared this belief. The prophet from Iran, Zoroaster founded the religion called Zoroastrianism around the 6th or 7th century B.C. INDIA: 6th or 7th Century B.C. A complex religious system emerged, from a fusion of Aryan and Sumerian influences. Between 1700 and 1200 B.C., the Aryans, a tribe of nomads from Europe invaded Northern India. Their religion was based on sky worship which absorbed the gods and goddesses of Greek and Roman mythology. Around 3500 B.C., the Sumerians settled in Babylonia. They brought abuot a cultural revolution which has influenced society to the present day. Each settlement had its own deity. HINDUISM. A hierarchy of gods emerges, who are all parts of a unifying principle, "a force said to exist throughout nature and in all men." (The religions of India are the only ones which believe that after death, the soul merges with a greater being.) HINDUISM has no founder, but a body of texts known as the "Veda," meaning wisdom. The Vedic texts express a belief in rebirth and transmigration as well: "the soul may be reborn in the body of an animal." THE LAW OF KARMA is the reason for rebirth! that the soul keeps returning to a mortal existence until all lessons of spiritual evolution are learned. Before branching off into BUDDHISM, allow me to pause right here and tell you what I think. ("You give your opinion." -- R.C.) From 3500 B.C., when the Sumerians settled in Babylonia and influenced HINDUISM, I feel that the belief system which emerged is the closest to the truth, "my truth." I try to respect all beliefs and do not wish to "convert" anyone to my way of thinking. Just to inform, to give choices, and most of all, to give HOPE to "non-believers." I believe in "the Force said to exist throughout nature and in all men." Anyone can see a Design in the flowers and plants and trees in Nature, in animals, and in the human body, with its complex systems and the way it works (if you take care of it properly.) I doubt the idea of the soul actually merging with a greater Being upon death. I am not sure about transmigration, but my friend Paula did believe that humans can re-incarnate as animals. (Please see earlier posts of Summer 2008, "Paula," etc.) HINDUISM: The search for "Brahman" (or "Atman"): the unifying principle which binds the Universe. It leads to mystical states of mind, "the cosmic consciousness." It shows the cosmos as spiritual and alive,...that death is an absurdity, that everyone and everything has eternal life. DISCOVERING MULAN...A team of creative people, employed by DISNEY in Feature Animation spent 3 weeks in China in June to July 1994. The movie took 5 years and 700 employees to create and produce! An artist on the team journeyed to the caves of Magou?...and copied the ancient paintings on the cave walls related to the Northern Wei (?) Dynasty. Dark caves -- drawing -- while holding a flashlight! Pam Coats, Producer of FEATURE ANIMATION for Disney said, after three weeks in China: "I felt an affinity to the people and the culture...noticing the interaction; the importance of the story of Mulan to the people. And I came home and said, We are going to do the story justice. And we're going to try to use all the really great research we got there and put it in the movie." MY VOICE. No, I'm not "going away." "Denise Dances" - May 23, 2008. "MAAP" website - June 2009. "Fool's Gold" book blog - June 2010 - July 2011. All my life, three years (3) has been the maximum amount of time I've been able to work the same job before burning out, resulting in physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. I worked for McGraw-Hill Financial Services in NYC from June 1987 until October 1990, 3 years and 4 months. The longest I've ever held the same job was at Shop Rite in New London from March 2002 until April 2006, (4 years) until serious physical health problems forced me to quit, as my body continued to undergo "The Change" around the ages of 40-44. Yes, "The Change" and the changes within the body and temperament do start to occur, perhaps even as early as the 30s, but most definitely in the time period called "Middle Age," that time in a woman's life known as "The Change," a woman in her 40s! (If you haven't checked it out; you should!) I. I started the "Denise Dances" blog at the encouragement of my college colleague, Deb Nieman (see her blog, "Antiquity Oaks.") I began my blog to expose what I felt was the negligence of the public healthcare system, according to my own experience. However, a crime scene began to emerge in places where I've lived, which has actually been the case in many situations throughout my life since I "moved out" to attend college in Fall 1984. "Crime X 3" is enough for me. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not cut out for it. It's time to step outside and allow those with the right equipment to take over! "No one can do everything but everyone can do something." ("Denise Dances," May 23, 2008 to the present: 8/15/11.) II. Making Art Affordable to the Public is the business of my art; which I created in June 2009. The business end I refer to is the actual "showing" or exhibiting of my paintings and drawings in local galleries and public places in Southeastern Connecticut (SECT). "MAAP" is also the website where I showcase my paintings for on-line viewing, created in June 2009, as well. III. OASIS is the name I gave my studio which originally began outdoors in July 2009. Outdoor Art Studio - (isolated scene) at the observation deck, end of the Nature Walk at Ocean Beach! However, once I began painting, in earnest, indoors in October 2009, my "studio" remained OASIS. OASIS, October 2009 to present, August 2011 (2 years). I plan to continue to paint (OASIS) and display my paintings in public (MAAP). However, due to fast approaching burn-out, I'm considering just 4 Art Shows in 2012: (1) the Mystic Art Center member show in February; (2) the "Art for Life" auction at Mystic Arts Center to benefit the "Alliance for Living" in New London, March 31, 2012; and possibly a summer exhibit at Mystic Arts Center; as well as a Fall show at the East Lyme Public Library. IV. "Fool's Gold" book blog: June 2010 - July 2011. I'm happy to say that I am done with the F.G. book blog, for now. This blog began as an on-line version of my novel, based upon my life in NYC in the early 1980s. As time went on, I became addicted to this format and enthusiastically added my: "Tales of Brookline;" "New York Re-visited," "The Single Mom of Cactus County," "Poetry of NYC," and "Poetry of ECSU," as well as finally my prize-winning fiction, "The Secret of Cherrygrove Manor." Who says I don't work? "Why don't you just enjoy your life?" Paula once said. I think it's time...to enjoy the fall...the beautiful weather before it gets cold...outdoor walks...good food...and of course, some more painting; outdoors and in! Hi! Had a nice swim / boardwalk walk to OASIS / and walk along the shore to the stone jetty which separates Waterford Beach via the Channel from Ocean Beach in New London! So you're crossing the Town Line by wading across the channel, a pilgrimmage I used to make during the earlier part of the 2000 decade. Walk down Ocean Ave to OB, along the shore, across the Channel, along Waterford Beach, up the road to Camp Harkness; then to Harkness Park, and across another Channel to The Strand! I haven't been able to make this walk in many moons, but at least to start from OB would be a great start! Fall is coming! I think that Seaside Park would be a cool hike to take, as well. The weather is yucky and I'm starting to feel the doldrums. What am I going to do to keep me busy and happy during the rainy days which are about to deluge us? Go to Niantic Cinema? See "The Help!" Stay tuned for either Monday or Tuesday, when I continue my own pilgrimmage to bring to you, fun facts re: life after death in ancient belief systems around the world. Groton Town is a very good place for me to cool off and I feel very much at home here, as it reminds me of my rural roots, including my childhood home in the woodsy Montville, CT and childhood memories spent with my sisters, my grandmother, Memere, and my cousins here in Groton. Joel Osteen once referred to "places of blessing" and I've elaborated in prior posts how the place of Groton has been a blessing to me. (Forgive me for feeling hot and aggravated, due to having to take my laundry outside of my living quarters, in this extreme heat, due to circumstances beyond my control.) JESSIE EDWARDS STUDIO: Kate Knapp! "Visions of Block Island: Recent Paintings." August 11-24, 2011. Opening Reception: 8/13/11. 5-7pm. I have been admiring the "wet on wet" bold and brilliant style of the oil paintings of local scenes in Block Island by Kate Knapp for about the past two years. From the article I recently read, she has been painting for the past 40 years and has had extensive formal training in the best art schools in the Northeast. However, her own unique talent clearly shines through in her work. Training is good, but I feel her talent lies in the "doing" art: Getting out there on the island every Spring and Summer, and actually painting outdoors AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM style -- rain or shine. Fortunately for her, art was her first love, and obviously, her talents were nurtured by the people who were close to her while she was very young. Peter had to be prepared by going through some very humbling experiences; he was a powerful man but a proud man as well. The Lord had to humble him before He could use him. Most strong leaders have a lot of natural talent, but they are also full of themselves (pride) and have to learn how to depend on God. They have to trade in their self-confidence for God-confidence. Your pain can become someone else's gain. Your mess can become your ministry if you will have a positive attitude and decide to let everything you go through prepare you for what is ahead. (P.S. I guess they forgot to mention patience!)
